Vcr makes knocking sound then shuts off

Is that when you insert the tape? Try ejecting and inserting a few times to see if you can "unstick" something that's stuck. If that doesn't work, you're probably going to need service. VCR mechanisms are usually driven by belts that dry out with age and can start slipping or breaking. It's going to be increasingly difficult to keep a VCR going in today's world. Service will get expensive and rare and parts hard to find. See if you can just buy a new one. Otherwise, get a DVD player and have any precious videos converted to DVD. It's only a matter of time before VCRs disappear entirely.

My Phillips DVD 3050V/75 will

You will need to remove the top cover of this DVD player to remove the disc from the Drive tray. Always unplug the unit before servicing. Be careful to not touch the sensitive electronics. Remove the disc and put the unit back together exactly how you took it apart. There should only be a few screws on the back and sides of unit, holding the case of the unit to the frame and front cover. CD disk tray is stuck in closed position. Manual

Most likely mechanical.

There are many possible reasons for why the drive won't open.

1. the drive mechanism is stuck.
2. the motor that moves the tray is broken
3. the flat cable that transfers movement from the motor to the other gears is out of place

I'll stop there, If you are outside of warranty, you may take apart the dvd player, if you are in warranty, then just try unplugging the dvd player for 5 minutes and then try again.

If your outside of warranty and your prepared to take it apart, unplug all the cables and unscrew the screws to get the top off.

Inspect the drive, and try to help it eject by rotating the gears in the drive, they might be a bit difficult to move as they may be hidden under the tray, find a way.

Once you get the tray to release the problem might be solved, inspect the gears and the rubber transfer cable from the top of the motor to the other gears that it in place and moves freely.

Put the power back on, don't touch anything inside the player while its plugged in. Now, see if the ejecting and inserting of a disc works properly. If it does, unplug and reassemble the unit, the problem is solved.

Won't play DVD+Rs

By mentioning that your disks are finalized, I am thinking that you are not creating the DVD in the proper manner. For DVD's to play back on commercial equipment, they have to either be authored, created from a ISO file, or cloned, bypassing the copy protection imbedded in many titles. Do a Google search on DVD authoring or cloning to learn how to sucessfuly create DVD's that will play back on your home player.

Philips LCD 42PFL3603D/F7 won't stay on until I've held the power button in a few times. The display comes on, then I hear a click and it shuts off. After a few cycles of this it stays on

Remove the cover on the back of the tv. Look for swollen or leaking capacitors. They kinda look like batteries. If they are bulging or leaking then that is your problem. You will have to de-solder the old ones off. Then solder the new capacitors onto the circuit board. Capacitors will cost about 20 dollars and installing them isn't that hard to do. It will fix your tv 99% of the time. So it is worth a try!

I have Philips TV mode

I'm assuming that you have checked that the sound is not muted. To confirm that a reset to factory settings is the next procedure: Menu - Setup - General - Factory settings. If you don't see/hear any modifications then it's a hardware defect, not something with the settings.
This happens when the tv thinks that the headphones are used. Simple test to confirm that: plug in a pair of speakers and see if you get the sound on them. If you get and the situation doesn't changes when you unplug them then this is a mechanical defect: the small switch inside the headphone jack is faulty and keeps signaling that the headphones are plugged in when they are not.
The only way to fix that is to replace the jack, which involves a very delicate soldering procedure , one that only a good repairman can do - you must call one.
