Power button just blinks,no buttons work
To get your DVD out of the non working player, you have to look on the bottom of the case below the tray. There you will find a little slot, about 2 cm long x 2 mm wide. Through that slot you will see a white plastic piece, sometimes its on the middle of the slot and sometimes its full to the left of it (the front of the player facing you). Use something that can be inserted in the slot (I used a little knife) and move the white plastic piece all the way to the left, that will loose the tray. Then you will be able to open the tray using your fingers, nails or anithing that won't scratch the finishing of the case.
Philips 642/37
it's not you. if it is not playing any disc and your on correct video input for tv call philips at 1-888-744-5477 and they will help with exchange process as these are exchange warranty models. if your still within grace period for retailer i would recommend taking back to retailer if possible as it would be quicker
DVD playback color
When passing the video signal thru a VCR on the way to the TV, you are activating the DVD's "Macrovision" copy protection. You need to hook it directly to the TV.
DVP642 DVD Player is only working in Audio mode
Mine does the same. Cannot get a picture using the Yellow RCA output. Use an S-video cable if you can - it should still work. If you get a black and white picture using the S-video output, go to MENU > VIDEO page and change the output from PyBywhateveritis to S-video and the color will come back. I only found out mine was broken when I needed to use the s-video cable for something else and tried switching to the Composite Video (RCA) to no avail no matter how many cables or TV inputs I tried.
Master Reset the device
Does anybody know how to master reset the device when the firmware update is failed due to power loss?
Refurbished philips dvp642/37 playing and stops playing
the problem is not the power supply capacitor. it will eventually fail, and need to be replaced, but when it does you'll know it because you wont be able to use the DVD at all. it wont turn on, and the standby light will just flicker.
the problem is that your mechanism/lens is probably dirty or dusty or out of alignment.
this device is kind of sensitive moreso than other players. by "sensitive" i mean "cheap"
try cleaning it with soft, lint-free cloth, and windex.
clean your disks as well.
if that doesnt work, you may just need to buy a new DVD.
at $60 its a good deal, even if some of them do crap out too soon. you can spend more $ on a better quality player if this fact bothers you.
Philips DVP642 DVD Player "No disc" problem
if its still under warranty, do that.
if it's not, try taking it back to the store and asking for a replacement. don't let the floor salesman tell you no. insist on speaking to the manager. my strategy is to: "be polite, appear slightly stupid, and dont take no for an answer" it works 80-90% of the time.
if you cant get anywhere (or dont want to try that route), then you have nothing to lose. open the case and try to clean the mechanism and lens
two screws on either side of the unit, and i think another 4 screws on the back side. this will allow you to pull the top cover off the unit.
clean the mechanism, and clean the lens. you can buy cleaner if you want, but i just use a soft cloth and some "no-streak" type window/glass cleaner (windex)
clean your disks as well. this DVD player seems to be sensitive to scuffs and dust more than some other players. you just have to be persistent.
or you could buy another DVD player. at $60, its really a pretty good deal anyhow.
good luck
Philips 642 problem
when mine has frozen up i push and hold the power/standby button for ten seconds then release then push it again and it comes on and opens as usual. or do you mean the disc is stuck in the machine after the door opens? maybe open the machine it could be inside.
DVD stuck inside, player won't turn on, standby light does NOT flash
test the capacitor with a meter to make sure it has the value stated on it.
the work on this unit is quickly exceeding its present value, most likely.
consider upgrading to a higher resolution unit if the fix is more expensive in parts and time than a new unit costs.
good luck

Problem with starting
read on a forum that changing out c316 1000uF will fix the problem, mine will not turn on now, seems to have gotten worse over time. I will change the capacitor from 1000uF 10v to 1000uF 16v. Look at your capacitor, mine looks like its ready to blow. Most other capacitors on the board are rated at 16 volts. I will be changing out the cap. to see if it works.
Philips DVD 750 VR
It may havee a problem with the button you need to press to switch from VCR to DVD, from what i understand and have seen this switch over is not automatic. On your remote you should have a control to switch from VCR to DVD. In addition on your unit there should be a button to switch from VCR to DVD. Try this and let me know how it turns out, if you are still having trouble we can setup a troubleshooting session.
