Picture has a white hue.

projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture has a blurry bottom

If picture looks 3d and will not adjust (select convergence in the customer menu) one or both of the STK-392-120 CONVERGENCE CHIPS ARE BAD.

What needs to be done if this is case is to replace both chips and any of the 6.8 ohm protect resistors around them that are discolored or bad---I did one of these sets a few days ago--repair takes about a hour.

The parts for this repair cost less than 20 dollars if you buy them on EBAY. The real question is are you able to do the repair yourself?

If yes, I can give you instructions--it involves getting at the chips--unsoldering all 18 pins on both--checking the resistors around them etc.

If you cannot do this repair--shop around your area--most shops get 300-400 for this repair---the one I did the other day I charged 250 total---in home parts, labor, house call--everything.

MAKE SURE IF YOU GET SOMEONE TO DO THIS THEY REPLACE BOTH CHIPS! Some idiots will come out and just replace one chip---the set is going to have the same problem in a few months----

Once both are replaced and the set adjusted--it will not have this problem again for 5-8 years.

Clearly I do not know if you can do this repair---I am here to help people-IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR NEED HELP---do not hesitate to ask me here .....

Blue will not converge vertically

did you check the (12) 6.8 ohm resistors as your model will usually have one or two that will need replacement when the ICs failed.

Color going

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1 - Failure in the convergence circuits. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

0667c5f.pngSOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed. Notice how dull the colors are and how white the screen looks. The screen may also look red, orange, dull, etc.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Comes on then shuts off

Hello Mha8649,

The TV shuts off because the shutdown circuit it turning the TV set off. The shutdown circuit does this because of an over-current condition. I would advise that you take the TV to a qualified TV repair shop.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Picture issues

It sounds like a convergence issue and possibly the amps themselves going out.. Cycling the unit off/on has me suspecting convergence amps first and possibly poor solder connections in the vert or convergence circuit. However, it could be one other thing, Vertical misadjusted. There is a methid for checking that in the service menu and I'll get to that in a second. The symptoms correcting themselves when you cycle on/off is very significant. I would first check for poor solder connections on the vert IC, and conv. amps. Then test the convergence amps themselves. If all else fails check the vertical adjustment. To adjust vertical enter service alignment mode by using 06-25-96 status, after entering service alignment mode it will be necessary to use the A/V button to get back to A/V4. When in the service alignment mode cursor down to GDE SAM. Cursor right and then cursor down to Geometry. Cursor right and then cursor down to VER. AMPL. then while watching the DVD in A/V4 cursor right or left to adjust the vertical amplitude until the white lines just disappear. Turn the set off to save the change. NOTE: Convergence may need to be touched up slightly after this adjustment has been made. Footnote: mnyce, this is one repair that I would not attempt unless you are fairly skilled at trace testing and knowing what to look for in a given circuit. As always, there are voltages in these areas that could harm you or further damage the unit. I would suggest contacting an honest qualified repair facility and explain your problem to them. Most will have no problem telling you exactly what I have here.. Goodluck. Bill

Philips LCD 42PFL3603D/F7 won't stay on until I've held the power button in a few times. The display comes on, then I hear a click and it shuts off. After a few cycles of this it stays on

Remove the cover on the back of the tv. Look for swollen or leaking capacitors. They kinda look like batteries. If they are bulging or leaking then that is your problem. You will have to de-solder the old ones off. Then solder the new capacitors onto the circuit board. Capacitors will cost about 20 dollars and installing them isn't that hard to do. It will fix your tv 99% of the time. So it is worth a try!

I have Philips TV mode

I'm assuming that you have checked that the sound is not muted. To confirm that a reset to factory settings is the next procedure: Menu - Setup - General - Factory settings. If you don't see/hear any modifications then it's a hardware defect, not something with the settings.
This happens when the tv thinks that the headphones are used. Simple test to confirm that: plug in a pair of speakers and see if you get the sound on them. If you get and the situation doesn't changes when you unplug them then this is a mechanical defect: the small switch inside the headphone jack is faulty and keeps signaling that the headphones are plugged in when they are not.
The only way to fix that is to replace the jack, which involves a very delicate soldering procedure , one that only a good repairman can do - you must call one.
