the set uses two stk-392-120 convergence chips, both will need to be replaced and the set sells kits for this based on brand and model number.

Problem is in standby power supply or microprocessor area---not the do it yourself repair and likely not economical to repair due to age and brand of set.

All CRT RPTVs have overscan, and some sources bring this out more than others.

It can always be cured to at least be able to see the needed parts of the pic, but hoses your picture beyond belief, and correcting that takes time, experience, patience and expertise.

I do overscan reduction on all CRT RPTVs as part of what my calibrations offer, but charge extra to do so.

If the images are getting darker then its certainly an issue with the three CRT tubes that are dying. Slowly the images will get darker and darker till you can no longer see a pic. If the image level is viewable then a brigthness/contrast adjustment should resolve the problem atleast for now. Otherwise you will need to replace the three CRT tubes to resolve this problem. This being a high voltage repair its recommended that you seek the assistance of a qualified tech as we are dealing with 30,000V here. As my mentor always says your life and limb are worth much more than this

Most likely your bulb has burned out. Best replacements come from the OEM, and are fairly easy to change.

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as

If your talikng about alignment that is done through the Convergence feature. If its the color balance youre refering too its most likley indicating that the CRT coolant needs replacment as that will make the red Tube dominate and wash out both blue and green colors untill they appear dull and dim.

If colors are skewed or look 3 d the convergence chips need to be replaced. This model should use two of the STK-392-120 BUT A FEW VERSIONS USE STK-392-110.

They are located on the large left board as you look from the back on metal heat sinks with fins. This can be a do it yourself repair if you have some skill.

Look at the chips if you remove the back cover; look at all the tiny resistors around the one close to the front of the set, most are 1.2 ohm 1/2 watt---you are looking for any that are white in the middle or discolored.

Usual cost on EBAY for a pair of the chips is under 14 dollars and the resistors are easy to test.

I can tell you the best way to get at them and do the repair.

If you want to save the set and save money I can help you.

My knowledge is first hand---I have repaired over 1,000 sets with this kind of problem.

Let me know what you want to do and I will assist you from start to finish.

That sounds to me like weak tubes or low emmission tubes. If it is old, it may be past its best and time for a new one.

The burned smell comes from a shorted parts.
This is usually a burned fusible resistor act as a guard when there is a short circiut to avoid further damaged to other parts. I've suspect that you have a short on the power supply section which is caused by voltage regulator. This is not DIY and quite technical so I've advice you to look for a qualified technician or repair shop to isolate the problem. This is fixable.

Thanks for using fixya.

Sounds like you have a capacitor going out on the same chipboard!! While your inside of the LCD's it would not hurt to fix the other capacitors. Normally when a capacitor goes out, the same resistors on the same chip group need to be changed as well. If they are not changed, it may cause the same capacitors to go out after a few hours of use. Ensure to check your display cable connection and yes, please connect it to a pc. You may get a blank, light blue, or other light display but not really enough to determine if the problem has been completely fixed.
