Very interesting. It fails for me with DVD-R 16x discs, fair enough, but also with DVD-RW 2x discs, so what next?

In theory, yes, this unit is capable of recording from VHS to DVD or DVD to VHS (where it is not prevented by copy-protection).

Ur Sharp DVD Recorder/VCR combo have any HDMI ports.Yes,Tries websites like Amazon.com,Ebay.com to buy a Digital microphone use the HDMI port it work fine.No tries researches buy the analog microphone.Just ask the vendors info.for the device functionable or compatible to ur device.

connect the red/white/yellow from the input on the dvd to the red/white/yellow on the vcr sellect av1 on the dvd recorder and you should be right and as a bit of help here is the manuel to your dvd recorder

I have three possibilities for you. One obvious answer would be that you are trying to record onto either a CD-R rather than a DVD-R, but I'm assuming that's not your problem. The second would be that you are trying to record onto a dvd that your recorder doesn't support (i.e. DVD-RW and your recorder only supports DVD-R). The final possibility is that the disc is a "dud." I have had this problem before and just had to try another disc. Good luck and let me know how it turns out, will you? Der Strom

sounds like a firmware error. Either the software needs to be upgraded or there is a faulty capacitor in the unit. You can test it with an ohmmeter to see if there are any that are not 25-30 ohms. You should have about 5 volts of power running through main circuit. Software update will have to be done by manufacture for $50 unless you can find a special plugin and software on the web

Some brands od empty DVD's will not work on every DVD recorder.Maybe Sharp has a software update for this problem.

Sorry but it sounds like the carriage is not aligning. That is a common problem with age at some point on all VCRs. It is most likely not worth repairing. Good Luck

Go to menu, scroll through the settings there. Each manufacturer is somewhat different, you'll have to click on something like Tools or Settings, something like that. If you still can't find it, borrow your neighbor's 12 year old.

ensure you are using DVD-R not DVD+R discs. if what you are attempting the record is copyright protected, depending on the protection, you may not be able to record.

make sure that the disc you are yous using was not protected.

I had to run from the RCA outs of my DVR into the inputs that are on the front right of the RW340...behind the little door.  Now I can easily record from live cable or from my Comcast DVR recorder.  Couldn't get it to work from the backside inputs.
Mine is just the DV RW340 (no U).  And yes, the manual is brutal.  We had to call tech support to find what disc will actually work in the darned thing.
Now my big problem is finding more 4x DV-R disks. Shoulda bought more when Comp USA was clearing them out a few years ago!

I have had great success with Dynex Model: DX-DVD-R25 discs.  And they play equally nicely on my Toshiba DVD player in the livingroom.   I have also given several away to people after I had transfered home videos to DVD and those people all had good results playing the discs that I made on my lowly Sharp Dv-RW340.
