The 'calibrate color' option
Have you tried the old remedy of powering off the printer, waiting a good 30 to 60 seconds, then powering it back up? Then try to calibrate it again and see if you're able to do it.
Even printers need to have their memory dumped and cleared once in a while. And these new printers do have a good deal of memory in them. Some have more memory than some old PCs I used to have <g>.
So, as it used to be for the PCs in those "olden days," when it was necessary to power off, wait, then power back on, printers need the same treatment, so that their memory can be cleared and started fresh.
Try to see if that will help you to be able to calibrate the printer.

I had similar problems when I first installed the printer and after different tests we found out that the Magenta ink print head was faulty. Changed head to a new one and problem solved. You will need to recalibrate and do paper set up's again.

As a software guy, I would have to advise against piracy. :)
There are several ways to get Visio for cheap. If you are a student, there are discounted versions available online and in stores. Also, you can check with your school for even cheaper options sometimes. Try the university bookstore if available. Or a Computer Science department maybe.
If you are working, and your company uses MS Office applications, find out if they have the "Microsoft at Home" program. You can get MS Office applications for really cheap that way. I can get Visio through my company's "Microsoft at Home" program for a few dollars.
