OK, the problem is one of the STK392-110 convergence amps has died. It is rare that both die at the same time, so either vertical or horizontal will go out, but not both. Also look for an open fusable resistor near said IC.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Clicking sound can be from a bad capacitor on the power supply board. To start with open the back of the unit and check the power supply board for any blown capacitors. Also check the flyback as it can be some loose wires in the coil. Usually this happens when there is a vibration in the horizontal circuit, the flyback and/or coil can make this noise. Also inspect the fuse if they are working fine and please make sure to turn off and unplug the TV for at least 1 hour (this will drain off current from all components especially capacitors) before you perform any repairs. Opening the unit is only recommended if you have some electrical expertise. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

There are several more fuses in the TV, but they are not like the main power fuse. Most of of the time there black with and lead coming out of each end about the size of a resistor. I think there are 9 of them, you will need an ohm meter to check them and a soldering iron to replace them. Good luck Eric.

unsolder a box behind the input board, (take it out or place it in carefully, do not force). Replace 11(10u/16v) capacitors, as you see on the picture.2267865.jpg

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

This is a model first sold 2002.

They have a history of the Hyper board failing. Usually noise or lines in the picture and the warmup time gradually gets longer and longer.

This board processes all signal from all inputs inside the set and is no longer available from Toshiba.

The only way to get one is from a national company called PTS Electronics who rebuilds or repairs them--cost for rebuilt board is about 220 plus shipping and part number for this model is:
Part Number23148024

I have a service bulletin with photos of the board on my computer.

It is a financial decision, not a job for the average do it yourself person to attempt.

Let me know if you have questions or need help.

Watch out for anything that has maginets around the area, try that and if it don't work ask again.

I think you need the convergence I.C.s there are 2 of them, (STK392-110 I think), you will need to be able to solder.

Toshiba 57H82... | Answered on May 22, 2010

Sounds like you need to check the convergence. You can in the MENU under PICTURE go down to the CONVERGENCE to make the adjustment, set the RED and BLUE

Toshiba 57H82... | Answered on May 22, 2010

You need to check all the resistors in the area of the ICs for opens and all the microfuses in the convergence area. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4220499-change_projection_tv_convergence_ics which explains the problem, how to fix it and where to get the parts. Let me know if you need more help. Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Sounds like bad capacitors in the power supply. check for bulging caps or replace the power supply

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

Hi,
How long have you had a problem with the remote? have you tried new batteries? A universal remote? If a universal remote doesn't work most likely it is a problem with the IR sensor on the tv itself. There are some ways to work around this and not spend any money ie using a cable box and home theater system. If you have any other questions please let me know.
Thank you,
lee

Most likely either the remote is not working or the receiver inside the set is bad.

All the front buttons on the set and the remote are routed to a micro that processes signals.

Make sure on the remote if it has multiple functions you have the TV one selected. The remote can easily be tested by almost any tv shop--I have a plastic card I use that has a coated area that reacts to infrared light from remotes--if the strip lights up when you press buttons the remote is good. I think you need to find out if it is the remote or the remote receiver (very rare for receiver to fail but it does happen)

If the tin can module you are referring to is the hyper module, it is common to replace all 11 caps because the factory caps ****. Check for bridged solder connections at STK's search the forum at electromaniacs for 50h81 :)

Look for loose connections in the power supply (plug, socket).

This sounds like a convergence problem. Use the menu functions to reset your set's convergence. If this is not enough, you may need to replace the convergence board.

hi,

a ) Sometimes it happens , presumably it is caused by these transistor

97049c8.jpg

these Q683 mutes pin 11 of IC TA8216

2044cfd.jpg

b ) if trying to unmute using the remote wont do, you may need to

temporary extract these transistor for the process of eliminating

the cause.

c ) If it works, then " b " ( base of transistor ) is high, or you

can use a multimeter to measure voltages on the base of the

transistor

d ) There could be other causes like the Audio IC ( TA8216 ), which is

less likely , although possible .

e ) if you have a signal tracer you can verify audio signal from pin 2

of the Audio IC if the audio signal is present.

f ) you can also try these :
