In that case the video channels from the AV switch circuit have failed and the only way to fix that is to replace the circuit. You didn't told us what is the exact model of your tv but if it's a Toshiba like the one above then it uses a jungle circuit from the TA 7698 family that has the AV switch integrated - the big rectangular one with 48 or 64 pins (depending on the version).
Its replacement is a complicated job that only a qualified repairman should do.

hello, if we are talking abuot a line at the middel of the screen, then its a problem at the horizntal
circuit. it could be a bad contact at the leg of a high voltage capcitor, then you shuld solder the contact. sometime the capacitor have to be changed. good luck!

gjrob,
You can connect external speakers with you model only if you have an external source of sound such as a receiver. This model does not have speaker outputs to directly connect speakers but it does have audio out connections that can send the sound from the tv to another source like the receiver.

On the back of your tv on the left there are connections listed under "Out". There is where you will find the audio out connections (red and White).

This set is full of safety circuits that can cause this. It is really hard to say because anything can cause that. Have a shop check it out for you. Thanks for using fixya.

The vertical IC needs resoldered and the caps in the immediate area checked and replaced. This is a good starrt for repair.

It could be the vertical output IC, but there may be other possible causes which include:

- bad solder contacts on deflection yoke connectors or dirty connector contacts (on the circuit board and / or on the picture tube neck)

- bad solder contacts on the vertical output IC or associated components (check for little cracks in the solder around the pins, these are so called "cold" or bad / broken contacts)

- power loss to the vertical output IC - check for any burned resistors or other components around that IC, assuming you know which one it is - see which ICs are connected to the wires going to the deflection yokes (coils) on the picture tube neck and check them well.

You need to resolder any bad contacts, clean any dirty pins on the connectors and replace any burnt out components (assuming you can still determine the type or value of the component).

Since you mentioned the problem occurs once in a while, this means that the IC probably fails when it warms up, which can often happen if there are loose connections or bad solder contacts.

Anyway, it could turn out to be a faulty IC, i just suggested a few other things that can be fixed quite easily, and possibly without the need to replace any of the components.

It is my guess that you have some pcb circuit traces that are cracked. Maybe near the back of the set near the input jacks.

wow this set has several problems that cause almost the same symtoms. There is a b+ filter cap off the flyback that supplys screen drive voltage th the crt that gets leaky and gets warm when the sets on. Also theres a resistor that feeds the voltage that gets warm and a cold solder connection appears but its dosent look like a bad solder connection so just resolder it. as a matter of fact most of those largewr resistors in this set causes all sorts of complaints soI resolder most of them just to stop any problems and a friend in the tv business still told me in one case he had an intermittant crt. and x ray protection cuircut problems.. Hope this helps GOOD LUCK

the symptom is caused by a breakdown in power supply or the horizontal deflection circuits. have it check by a qualified service technician.
