I have had the exact problem you are describing.
I found that the bearing at the back of the drum where it spins was wearing out & had some free play in it.
That allowed the drum to drop down maybe a 1/8 to 1/4 inch but it was just enough to where close would catch between the edge of the drum & the box part of the dryer which would leave black smear marks on the close.
Sometimes the dryer would run fine, other times it would make scrunchy or screeching noises which was the bearing.
Try this with your dryer to confirm it is the same problem mine had.
Open the dryer door & place the palm of your hand against the front of the dryer with your fingers dangling over the opening.
Place your fingers against the edge of the drum (where the drum butts up against the front wall of the dryer) a push up firmly as if to raise the front of the drum up.
There should be absolutely no movement from that drum other than spinning in a circular motion.
If it raises up just a tiny bit then drops back down when you release it, then you know the problem is the bearing for the drum.
