Where is the fuel filter located on my 2001 ford explorer and can i replace it my self
Step 1
Park the Explorer and apply the parking brake. Open the hood and locate the fuse box near the battery. Open the fuse box and locate the fuel pump relay. Remove the fuel pump relay by gently pulling up on and and rocking it if necessary. Start the engine and allow it to run until it stalls. Once the engine stalls, turn the key off and remove it from the ignition.
Step 2
Put on your safety glasses. Climb under the vehicle on the driver side near the rear tire. Locate the fuel pump protective shield near the fuel tank. Remove the two shield mounting bolts with the appropriate socket. The fuel pump is located behind the shield. It is about the size of a soda can and has three lines coming off of it.
Step 3
Remove the two lines that are on the same side of the filter by pushing the colored tabs of the fuel line together and then pulling the line off. On the single line you need to remove the fuel line retainer by prying it off of the line with the flat-head screwdriver. Disconnect the fuel line by using the fuel line release tool. Clamp the tool around the filter side of the fuel line, then push the tool into the fitting until you feel a snap releasing the retainer spring, and pull the line from the filter. Loosen the fuel filter clamp with the screwdriver. Remove the fuel filter from the vehicle.
Step 4
Install the new fuel filter into the clamp with the arrow on the filter pointing towards the front of the vehicle. Tighten the clamp until it is snug. Install the single line by pushing it onto the filter until you feel it snap into place. Push the line retainer onto the line until it snaps into place. Install the other two lines onto the filter until you feel them snap into place. Install the fuel filter shield and tighten the bolts to 89 inch-pounds with the torque wrench.
Step 5
Install the fuel pump relay and close the fuse box cover. Close the hood. Turn the ignition key on for 10 seconds. Turn the key off and then back on to pressurize the fuel system. Check for leaks around the fuel filter. Start the engine and check for leaks one more time.
