JVC HR-S9500 S-VHS VCR Questions & Answers
When hitting menu button--message gives
This usually occurs when the Coax is either not in the plug fully, or is partly disconnected inside the end of the plug. It fails to make a shileded contact and thus reduces the quality of the signal.
Check plugs
check coax is in place properly inside plugs on cord between the wall and unit. Centre of coax to centre pin (firmly) and the silver wire collar is to the outside of the plug casing.
Make sure there are no loops in coax causing resistance.
Check antenna has not moved off the signal in high wind.
If the unit has been fitted with an antenna amplifier check that it is actually working, and has not either dropped out of the power plug or has failed.

OK, found the problem. Another website had the same question on the HR-S9600U, the 9500's replacement:

I checked my vcr, and, sure enough, there was a sort of clicking sound coming from the drum area immediately before the unit would go into "Auto" mode. I removed the complete drum assembly, and tore into the little gearbox, and found the two black, plastic gears with inside pinions that drive the metal screws to change the video head position had each cracked and were slipping on the shafts. This caused the gearbox to bind up.
Using a jeweler's screwdriver, I roughed up the metal shaft and the inside of the gears where they slip onto the shafts, and glued them on using a two-part epoxy. I then re-assembled it all, sorta setting the screws about two turns after their contact with the base of the upper drum. Now, upon power-up, the drum adjusting motor toggles one direction, then the other, and the unit stays on. Playback seems OK.
So, there you go. Yay me....

The 1st step is to determine if this is a problem with the vcr or your tv/monitor. Does the problem occur when the vcr is plugged into ANY tv or monitor?
Have you tried a different input? For example, if you now use the S video input on your TV, try the video input (RCA jacks), or the RF input (coax cable input).
Please reply in order to continue the troubleshooting process.

Many models of this time frame have an auto index function, and will alway record the pulse when entering record mode from "stop" or "pause". To prevent this unit from recording the pulse, try backspacing the tape, then press "Play", then press "Record" while play is engaged. Always works for me. Another thing you can try if you want the machine to ignore the index on previously recorded material, is to switch the index function to "Counter"; When FF or REW, the unit will look for the counter "0000" rather than the index pulse. ...Accordianman

Hi,
This is a common problem with some VHS units. The problem is that the tape does not fully extend over the video head and the slack sensor shuts the unit off. This involves the motor and driving mechanism that actuates the spreader arms that moves the tape. Usually this is caused by slippage of a small rubber belt.
Though the repair work involve is relatively easy, removing the mechanism and replacing the belt would require that you be familiar with component placement and certain timing sequence of tape loading. Your best bet probably would be to seek the services of a qualified professional.
Hope this be of some help/idea. post back how things are or should you need additional information.
good luck and kind regards.
Taping shows on a jvc vcr.
Well from memory... you have to Plug in the Antenna to the Video, then from Video to TV, then ya Tune in the "Tuner" section of the Unit.. that outputs on ya TV, then you can simply press the record button(s).. also there is the option of Timer Recording... There was also a TV/VCR switch that had to be toggled on some models...
But ya really need a manual I believe the manual is at the below link...
