Brother MFC 8820D
Error Message
Hi Erika:
A burning smell presents when paper is stuck on the fuser (The hot thing that heats the toner to the paper.) I would take out the drum, and peek in the printer with a flash light and see if you see any paper stuck anywhere it does not belong. Usually, the paper will be burnt "Brownish" in color.
With the drum, there are contacts on them. Make sure they are clean; and do not have toner residue on them. Easy to clean with a pencil eraser. Gently, rub the eraser over the metal contacts to clean off residue. Hope that helps you. If so, please leave me positive feed back.

Brother MFC-8820D Machine Error A
For the error code "7a" to be fixed permanently, you need to ensure that the main PCB is fine and is working in good condition.
If the error code is caused due to malfunctioning of the main motor, then you need to check the whole setup by connecting it with another motor.
In this case, make sure that there is no mechanical load present on the main board.
While fixing this error code, you will notice that the motor runs slowly initially and then picks up the speed later.

My machine displays on the LCD: "machine error 68"
First, I would recommend NOT trying to manually install this printer by
using the add printer wizard in windows and selecting the the port and
drivers to use. I would use the install cd to set this all up, it makes
setting up this printer MUCH easier. If you are unable to use the
install cd then get the IP address for the printer from your router
admin page then with the printer "installed" go into the printer
properties, go into the port, add a port, and instead of using a
printer name just type the IP address for the printer in. Also for any
networked printer make sure you don't have a firewall blocking it (this
would include making sure that if the printer requires a port opened in
the router that all requests for that port are routed to the IP address
of the printer).
