Ok, Well NO not really you are going to need a 'scope. But in saying that, there is NO reason to not try, it may be fine, and not need any aligning? If you know your way around electronics, then you know that the
very first place to start is the Power Supply, as, as, you must know, without that 100% spot on, NOTHING will ever work in the set. First, you MUST get a service manual for your unit, this is a MUST have. It is almost impossible to service a set without one. As for ESD, YES ALWAYS wear you wrist strap at ALL times. Now for that "pop" you heard, have you found the cause of that? It will no doubt be an Electrolytic Capacitor, but maybe not, in any event, you
MUST find that, and also
Find Out WHY, that has happened. usually, what kills caps is, Overvoltage, AC, or AC Ripple, or Heat, I would doubt, that that faulty cap, will be on that X drive board, but I hope it is, I would, suspect, though, that it may be in the PSU. But in any event that must be found and the "Cause" also found, or the problem will simply re-appear. Remember, we have the "Symptom", and the "Cause", of that symptom, BOTH must be found and remedied.

You indicated you had a "Field Service guide" hopefully, this is what we call a "Service manual" If it is not specific, to your exact model, I implore you to get one, even if one must pay for it, it will pay for itself, very quickly indeed. I have included a couple of links above for manuals, not service ones, but still handy to have. I could only find Pay for ones. If indeed you have got the right one, this point is moot.
As I used to tell my students, "Are the Voltages Correct" This is where one must start as related. get the PSU A OK, and the rest is easier.
Hope this has been of some help, if you need any more help, drop me an email,
[email protected] I will do what I can.
