Vintage VHS recorders can get quite messy. Probaly you need to take it to service. Presume it's time to convert your family tapes to DVD.

I forget exactly how this goes but there are two posts on either side of the mechanism that read a light signal and a center pole that goes through the round hole on the cassette that gives the light signal (no tape-end of tape). Put a piece of tape on the two side posts and see if that changes anything. Be careful: the tape now knows where end of tape is - do not fast wind/rewind to the end! The loading motor may have failed or a rubber belt has slipped off or is too loose or broken.

your VCR has a problem with the drive belt CAPSTAN, maybe is broken or fallen, you have to take it apart and check that the band is in order

E2 is not an error code, it is probably indicating the external line connected to the VHS.

Disconnect power for ten minutes, and check all wires connected to the unit. Reconnect the unit with no wire attached.
Connect SCART or AV connection to TV, then start first the VHS, and then the TV.

If that does not work, the unit must be disassembled and tested at component level by a technician.

In that case call Mitsubishi at the number listed on the owners manual.

VCR jams are typically caused by rubber parts aging or excessive dirt. First, if you can find one, buy a cleaning tape and really clean the mechanism. This probably won't solve all the problems though. You'll need to find a reputable repair person who has repaired VCR's in the past. He'll know which rubber to replace, where to put the lubrication and possibly replace any springs or gears. Good luck

E2 means: Loading motor locked in the unload direction. Usually(not always) happens with a going bad VCR tape on the rewind. Tape is becoming too difficult to rewind and/or VCR is getting tired. Eject tape. Discard tape as soon as practical, new tapes are cheap. To clear: Hold power on/off button for 8 seconds.

unplug it for 30 minutes and retry...any luck?

Just had the same E2 come up on my HSU-445. The only thing we could figure out was to try a different tape than the one that was in there when the error came up. That seemed to do the trick. Not sure how long that will work. Good luck.

Yes with care. Simply remove the cover and with care unwrap the tape. If you must break the tape - but make sure all residual tape is cleanly removed. Re assemble and put a tape head cleaner through- following the instructions.
