Are you using the correct gas to oil mixture? It is a 2 cycle engine. If you don't mix the proper oil and in the proper amount, the engine will definitely get hard to pull start and will seize up into a permanent coma.

Time to buy a new one or order a long block from Husqvarna No way to fix a broken casing unless replacing the side that is broken.

You need to make sure it is mechanically sound, has the piston picked up on the exhaust side? does it have enough compression? is there signe of concrete dust on the inside of the air filter and filter houseing?there are many after market carb gasket sets, some have a small hole missing from the diaphram and gasket on the metering side, this activates the compensator, this needs to be there as the metering cover has no breather hole in it.

the slower you cut, the less the chipping. also, tape the cut line masking tape.

I fear that the belt is slipping in the pulleys, the clutch is very unlikly to slip as it is a metal to metal contact, i have never had to fit a clutch due to it slipping, the K970 went on from the k950 and had a poly v belt and pulleys, you can retro fit the the pulleys belt and blade shaft, the loading on the standard belt is very high especially when using a 16" blade.
