Even a small machine needs a powerful motor to shred 12 sheets at a time which this one is rated for. So I would guess a 13 amp rated lead is safest.

Try cleaning the "eyes" in the middle where you insert the paper, they may just be dusty/dirty.

Unplug the shredder. Either blow with canned air or take a small paintbrush and clean the sensors where you put the paper in. There is one above and one below in the center of the slot.

Silly question if it shreds paper fine but....when did you last oil the machine.???
Cross cut shredders need to be regularly oiled..( pour some shredder oil across the cutting blades).
It may just be that the credit card is too thick!

From what you describe it sounds like the "eyes" work ok because you hear the click of the relay inside but if it dosnt run then its likely the pcb inside is "pooched"...contact Royal at 1-800-524-0799 for parts assistance.

Please verify how the paper should be advanced based on the typewriter manual.
