You could try to install the XP drivers by running them in compatibility mode on Vista. It might work

Please bear in mind that this is an old printer, therefore fargo have not made any drivers for windows vista. You could download the NT/2000 drivers or the ME drivers and run them in compatibility mode.

you can download the drivers from the manufacturers web site

take the ribbon out, and rewind it a little bit and see if you see print on it. if you dont, chances are your printhead is either bad or has loose cables going into it.

if you do see print, either your card is not aligning properly or the head lift motor might not be working (when the unit on, open the door, and press both buttons at the same time and see if the printhead does an up and down motion), platen roller is bad

they dont make vista drivers for the 4250

it sounds like you have a bad main board again. you might be having some power issues.
we are an ASC for Fargo, if you need parts send me an email. Although the 4250 has been discontinued a long time ago, parts are scarce.

They only have drivers up to NT and Win2KPro. Try using the driver in compatibility mode.

Assuming you are asking about colors out of alignment, usually this is due to the card slipping and returning to the corrent position in each pass. I have corrected this problem by thouroghly cleaning all the rollers with an alcohol wipe. With the cover open and the ribbon removed, firmly hold the wipe against the two gray and one black roller while depressing the forward and reverse [power & online buttons] and allowing the rollers to run several revolutions against the wipe. I just use typical medical or first aid wipes, no need for fancy equipment wipes. The alcohol rejuvenates the rollers and keeps them sticky so to speak, so the card is moved correctly. To clean the feed roller, send a card or self test from the driver to the printer with the cover open and the ribbon removed. While you are at it, use a wipe to com[letely clean the metal interior of the printer. Cleanliness is next to godliness when it comes to these printers. ~ Jon

Download the Windows 2000 driver. Go to "Settings" then to "Control Panel". Then go into "Printers and Faxes". On the left hand side click "Add a Printer". Check "Local Printer attached..." but make sure "autmatically detect..." is not checked. Then click next. Select the port that the printer is connected to. Then click next and it will ask for the software. Click "Have Disk" and browse to the folder where you saved the driver. It should then find the Fargo 4250 driver and your in business.

and try it out, it shoul work fine!

Assuming you have a color ribbon (#045410 YMCKO), then it is likely that the ribbon-type is set incorrectly in the printer driver. It should automatically set, based on the RFID tag attached to the ribbon. But this won't set automatically if your device security settings (Printer Properties => Security tab) don't allow you to "manage printer" and "manage documents", in addition to "print". ERROR 273 does not come up in the manual but I might have nailed it. This error is a generic error which applies to several issues but most likely if you've just recently fiddled with the printer it could be a motor or other cable not connected. In my case I swapped out the laminator sensor and had forgotten to connect the cable back on the laminator motor. After I connected it all worked normally with no errors. Surely hope this helps someone out.
