The clutch has belts in it which lose elasticity and should be replaced frequently for proper performance. The brush bar also gets hair and debris that works its way into the bearings and main shaft. Check this area thoroughly and clean or replace as necessary.

There has to be a clog or restriction or a part missing somewhere, if not a changeover valve may not be switching airflow from floor to tools

Hi David,

Thanks for your question.

I wonder if you have a picture you would be willing to share, showing us this effect? I'm not certain what might be causing this.

Alternatively, it might be best to give the Dyson Helpline a call on 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA), 0800 298 0298 (UK). Our experts will be happy to talk you through some further diagnostic checks when you have your machine easily to hand.

Best wishes,

Allan

check for partial blockage in the wand especially at the bends in the head
check that the filter bowl gasket is in good condition
bagless vacuums still have a filter before the motor and if that is missing any excess dust may have eroded the fins of the impellers which will require a new motor unit

It is probably stretched and needs replaced. The belts are in the clutch, it is easier to install a whole new clutch

Visual inspection can help you decide if the brush bristles look like they are missing or too short. Also if rugs do not clean up as well or leave a pattern or trail. These two together should tell you.

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

Like most Dyson vacuums, DC04 is equipped with a thermal cutout, which will shut the vacuum off for protection if it starts to overheat. This could be due to a blockage - the pre-filter may also need a wash. It should automatically reset after it's had at least 2 hours to cool down. You can prevent this from reoccurring following the steps below.

To wash the pre-filter, use cold water without detergent, as shown in the video below. Allow at least 12 hours for both parts of the filter to dry completely before replacing it.

To check the vacuum for blockages, just follow the steps shown in our online Support guide: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc04/dc04-standard/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-won-t-switch-on-or-cuts-out/machine-won-t-switch-on-or-cuts-out/my-machine-cut-out-whilst-i-was-using-it/how-to-wash-filters/machine-not-sucking-picking-up-as-well-as-usual-dc04/wand-suction

If you'd like further advice after giving these checks a try, please give our experts a call directly on 0800 298 0298. We're available from 8am-8pm from Monday to Friday, and 8am-6pm on weekends. Calls are free from UK landlines.

If the hoover switches on then you may have a blockage in the cleaning head or pipe. If it does not switch on the you may have a break in the cable where it enters the machine. It is quite common for the cable to break there.

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

Our online Support pages for DC04 contain all the information you might need to know to resolve issues with your vacuum in the event of a breakdown: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc04/dc04-brush-control

Although it's an online guide, and is designed to be navigated quickly and easily via your web browser, the pages could also be printed out if you wanted a hard copy.

I hope this helps, but if you'd like any further information or advice, please give our freephone UK Helpline a call on 0800 298 0298.

Is it stuck in machine or is the door stuck?

Dyson DC04 HEPA... | Answered on Nov 02, 2013

VERY gently tap it with a non-metal object, like a wood handle or something to see if that will loosen it up. Then, try using a flat-edged screwdriver to pry it loose from it's base, but VERY gently, so as not to damage it.

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC04 has a brush control on the cleaner head, you'll need to set this to 'On' for carpets, and 'Off' for hard floors. You can find out how to do this on our Support site:

http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc04/dc04-brush-control/my-machine-is-not-working/i-can-see-something-wrong-visual/i-can-see-something-wrong-visual/my-brushbar-is-not-rotating2/does-the-brushbar-rotate-with-the-power-on

If your machine does not include the brush control, it will only be suitable for vacuuming carpeted surfaces and we'd advise against using it on hard floors in upright mode. However, you can use the hose and wand to vacuum hard floors and we have several suitable hard floor tools available which may help.

I hope this helps - if you'd like further advice you can reach our freephone Helpline on 0800 298 0298. Just to let you know, our Helpline is available from 7am-10pm, 7 days a week.
Best wishes,
