My Masterlink is 7 years old. Do I need to replace my hard drive? How many hard drives, make and models?
Thank you.

Any 3.5" IDE hard drive will do, it doesn't need to be a large one, as the Alesis will only 'see' the space it needs to - google 'standard ML9600 hard drive size' to see, I can't recall offhand.
You don't HAVE to upgrade the OS if the machine is working fine. You WILL have to install it on a new HDD if you install one.
For what it's worth, I could only get the OS to install from a disc I made on a Windows XP PC. Three or four attempts from a Vista machine all failed. Win 7 and 8 are unknown territory for me.
Make certain you have an OS disc BEFORE you replace the HDD.

How to download the OS firmware?
Hi, I'm in the process of restoring a Masterlink, and have just done what you are trying to do. Go to this link:
http://www.alesis.com/masterlink
Read through the materials and then go into "Docs and Downloads" and there you will find the "System Software Update Guide", which explains how to determine which OS version you need based on your serial number, so you can create the ISO disc for the OS you need. I suggest you print it out for easy reference. Then download and unzip the OS files and create your Operating System ISO CD. The instructions are pretty clear so if you're methodical you should have no problems getting up and running soon. Have fun!

Alesis Masterlink ML 9600 won't power up.
After reviewing the repair and owners manuals. I have come to the conclusion that there is a short in the power supply board. Your drives should be fine. I don't know off hand how expensive it is to fix in your area. I would say approx $200
