Kenmore Elite, 9 years old, top loader. Agitates

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.#######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

The Kenmore / Whirlpool top load uses a reversing motor to initiate the pump for draining and the transmission to spin.

If you cannot hear the motor trying to turn the pump, (but the washer will agitate) the problem points to the Timer, or the Lid Switch.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

Following is a description of how to release the console for access to the pins.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

Also see the following for a more detailed description of how the transmission works.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/2550f737b3129b0c85256b0600504738/$FILE/787772%20%234.pdf

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=913ba652cd504fb162f87d892bcb427b

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part.

If the problem isn't in the switch, and the Timer continues to move, the problem is likely in the transmission.

We had the same problem:

If you lift the lid, put it down again and the washer begins to spin, the problem is likely in the transmission "Neutral Drain Assembly".

Those cams/gears etc. in that assembly keep the washer from spinning until all of the water is pumped out and then go into spin mode.

Apparently, by opening and closing the lid, torque from the motor starting throws the cams into the right gears so that the washer will spin.

Ours had the same problem, no spin unless the lid was raised and lowered or we shut off and re-started the cycle.

After looking at the transmission parts list (available on a number of sites) and on the Whirlpool site (Whirlpool makes Kenmore) we noticed that the one of the cams in the neutral assembly which is supposed to have a small spring, didn't on ours when we tore the transmission apart again

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%20W10114743.pdf

Found the part number for a kit (Whirlpool part number 388253 Neutral Assembly) for $15.00 and replaced the cams and gears.

In order to get the transmission out, you have to remove the cabinet, the fabric dispenser and both agitators. The top agitator uses a plastic 1/2" drive bolt (a 1/2" socket extension works well).

You don't have to remove the drum.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

Lay the machine down (after disconnecting power and hoses, remove the pump (two clips), the motor (two screws hold two clips on the motor), lift and set the motor aside.

Remove two 1/2 inch bolts for the motor mounting plate and three 1/2 inch bolts for the transmission.

Pull the transmission, remove the clutch (there is a spring clip that holds the clutch on the main agitator shaft), remove the 8 screws carefully the transmission holds 14 - 15Oz of oil, remove the clip holding the main spin gear on and check the plastic cams.

If the cam that should have a spring doesn't, or the others look damaged, or the main spin gear is damaged the washer won't go into spin mode.

If that's the problem, install a Neutral drain kit, put everything back together carefully and the problem may be solved.

As an aside, fixing ours cost less than $30 including 80-90 weight gear oil vs. $170 for a new transmission.

DOES NOT SPIN

It sounds like you may have a broken motor coupling. This is a simple and inexpensive repair.

If the washer does not agitate or spin, but will STILL drain, the likely culprit is a broken motor coupling. You may also hear a loud rattling sound as the drive motor engages, but the tub no longer spins. Whirlpool uses a motor coupling in the place of a drive belt. It is located between the drive motor and and gearcase (transmission). This configuration is known as a "direct-drive" system. It is common for the coupler to wear out with age and break. Newer versions of this coupler are more resilient and resist breakage. The following link explains how to access and/or replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574231-replacing_a_motor_coupling

The part number for the improved motor coupling is included in the link I provided. The average cost is about $10-$15. You can purchase replacements at any of the following webistes:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

Prices vary between sites, so shop and compare. If you do not wish to order on line, take the part number provided and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. This is a common part they should have in their in-store inventory.

If you have any questions, or if your symptoms differ from what I have listed, please post back and let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

Kenmore 80 series washer , model #92281100 is leaking when I use warm water

If it is only leaking when you use warm water it is likely a leak from the delivery side of the hot water inlet solenoid. The only way to check is to remove the top and look. https://www.google.com/search?q=Kenmore+80+series+washer+92281100+leaks ..

Thats a simple one to replace. Unplug unit. Take a putty knife and release clips that secure console to top. They are located on each front corner of console. Raise lid. Unplug harness from switch. Take ground screw out that is part of switch assembly. Release plastic tab that holds switch in place and remove switch. Install and snap into place new switch with lid open. Put ground screw back in place and plug harness back into place. Lower lid and then raise and listen for clicking noise. Put console back in place. That’s it.

Kenmore I own a Kenmore top-loading washing machine model 700S. The glass lid of my machine pops up from the back, and the rubber plug that holds it in place comes off.

If this is the model ('700S' is a series name), the lid is no longer available.https://www.searspartsdirect.com/model/3fpuvflk1q-000583/kenmore-elite-79629272000-washer-partsSo best fixes would be silicone and liquid metal epoxy as needed.https://www.google.com/search?q=kenmore+top-load+700s+lid+replacementI also found this, if the 'rubber plug' is the pivot on the back edge, you could make one from a dowel and fix with epoxy.https://www.searspartsdirect.com/product/59z4rap6tv-0026-795/id-afg72909503..

Kenmore filled up with water then quit working?

Question edited for clarity. 'then', a moment in time. 'than', a comparison between one thing and another. It depends on the model, but usually related to the lid lock. Also check the breaker. Why does my washer stop working after filling with water? If the Top Load Washer stops after filling with water, be sure to check the house circuit breaker/fuse as well as the outlet and plug. Washers should be plugged into their own separate, dedicated outlet. ..

Kenmore washer 110.20022013 stops after wash cycle

Usually it's the lid switch..When you open the lip look straight down usually..When you close the lid it inserts a small plastic piece that goes into the hole telling the washer the lids down..If it broke it will make the washer stop mid cycle..You can stick a wooden (only made of wood) into the hole and sometimes it will start to work..Then you know that's the problem and just get your model number of the washer and replace it..Hope this helps

Kenmore 98702 center won't drain when using cold water cycle.

Troubleshooting: Check the drain hose: Ensure that the drain hose is not clogged or kinked. If it is, straighten it out and remove any blockages. Inspect the drain pump: Check the drain pump for any debris or foreign objects that may be blocking it. Clean it out if necessary. Check the lid switch: Ensure that the lid switch is functioning properly. If it is faulty, it may prevent the machine from starting the drain cycle. Check the waste hose: Ensure that the waste hose is not clogged. A clogged waste hose can prevent water from flowing out of the machine. If this troubleshooting does not work, you may have to turn to professional assistance from a repairman.

Kenmore washing machine. When I hit the start button, the washer spits out about 4 onces of water and then shuts off. This happens whether I use hot or cold water.

For some reason, it is failing the self diagnostic tests. You need a service engineer, because the reason is likely the main control board. For that reason you need the correct diagnosis and warranty on the part and the work performed. This is not a simple fix. If the machine is old it may be prudent to just replace it.

Kenmore Oasis washer model 110. 27072603 is extremely loud like a jet engine when in the spin cycle. No grinding or metalic sound, just a loud whirring that sounds like an engine at very high RPM.

The electric motor turns at a very high rate and as the brushes grip the commutator, they whine. The more weight in the machine, the more noise. Normal.
