the feed dogs are what move the fabric under the presser foot so the needle can sew. check your instruction manual and see where the lever is that operates the feed dogs. if the lever is up then the feed dogs will feed the fabric, if the lever is down, then the fabric will stay in place. if the lever is up and the feed dogs are not working, then it's time to have them checked.

Look in your owner's manual for needle replacement procedure. You have to unscrew the small screw holding the needle. Be careful that the new needle is properly seated before screwing it tight. Otherwise, you might end up with it slightly askew.

Sergers are not really meant to sew very thick material. The blades have a maximum amount of range, or thickness that they can reach to cut. If you go outside that range, get ready for a big repair bill! You can break loopers and even the needle plate when you "push" a serger. My advise would be to use you sewing machine for the, "pounding" work. The type of material matters too, A thick Quilt like fabric can be sewn becatuse it's not dense material. A thinner harder denim could max out at 3 layers because of it"s hard finish. If the fabric you're sewing isn't dense like, you could just need new knives.

Use a regular straight stitch, but use the rolled hem foot if you have one.
