It sounds like the stem wouldn't be on the right position, try pulling the stem a little out from the watch, it should snap slightly. Now you should be able to advance the time, see if you can pull it out just a little more to get directly to the date, if not, see if you can push it in a little to get to the date if that doesn't work, then you would have to rotate the hands until you get to the right date.
