Hi,

It sounds like there is a defrost problem starting. What you will need to do is unload the freezer, take the shelves out and the panel off behind the shelves. This will expose the evaporator(cooling coils). If there is a frost build up on those then the problem is defrost related.

All the cooling takes place on these coils for both the fresh food side and freezer, the fan just above those coils moves air to the fresh food compartment and around evenly in the freezer. If frost builds up and air cannot flow easily you will loose cooling.

There are 3 defrost components, one of which is bad, A heater, a thermostat and a control. If you can send me your complete model number and brand from the tag on the refrigerator I can walk you through how to test each one.

Refrigerator not cooling-freezer section icing up

Refrigerator not cooling, ice forming on back of side-by-side freezer:
Turn off unit. Empty freezer section. Remove freezer back panel (4 screws) to expose iced-over coils. Use a fan to speed up defrosting. Put a towel or a plastic drip pan in the bottom of the freezer to collect melting water (rather than letting the water collect and maybe overflowing in the drip pan underneath the refrigerator).
After defrosting, by temporarily replacing the freezer back panel and turning on the unit, the refrigerator may operate OK for about 3 weeks before the next excessive ice build up.
Possible problem- a burned out Defrost Heater.
To check: After defrosting, turn off power to or unplug the refrigerator.
Unscrew the Defrost Heater bracket (2 screws). When loose, unplug the two wires connected to the unit. Have the unit checked, or use an ohm-meter to check continuity. If unit measures "open", high resistance, replace the Defrost Heater and bracket. If the heating element shows continuity (or low resistance) the heater is probably OK and you have another problem. Now you may need to contact a repair man.

If you clean up the coils down under the ice box could work better. If you change the water filer or water valve or both you might see an improvement.

This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer. If this repeatedly happens with yours, you may can prevent it by taking a bare copper wire and wrap it around a fin near the heater and put the other end a few inches down the drain. The heat convection may prevent it from freezing.

I have a GE TBX25PAXCRWW top mount freezer model.

Your problem is a clogged defrost drain . This is accessed from inside the freezer section and by removeing the rear freezer panel . Use a hairdryer to defrost the pan , under the coils . Also , the drain line for your model , is located behind the refrig . So , you only have a short area between the drain hole and drain line , to clear . I would suggest blowing thru the drain hose behind the refrig also , to make sure it is clear .

My icemaker isn't working. There's no water in the

Not sure what setup your ice maker has to let it know when the ice tray is full, but some ice makers have a bail that goes up with rising ice levels. When the ice bucket fills up, the ice maker shuts down.

Lifting the bail up all the way until it catches on a small ledge turns this type ice maker off. If ice is allowed to stack in the bucket too high, or is shoved back as someone scooped out ice, the bail may inadvertently have been pushed onto the ledge.

Bottom line; check whatever method your ice maker uses to turn off ice production when the bucket is full to see if it is in the OFF position.

WATER LEAKING IN BOTTOM OF REFRIGERATOR UNDER VEGETABLE KEEPER

This sounds like the problem I responded to for another user. I hope it works for you. I got this when the J-trap on the back of the fridge was blocked, not allowing condensation to properly drain into the drain pan.

I solved this problem by pulling the black drain tube off the J-trap (you may need to loosen the holding clamp at the bottom of the tube), giving the J-trap (it's about 2" round) a slight twist to release it from the sheet metal, and carefully pulling it out. Be careful as the sheet metal is sharp. You will see a 1" PVC tube end that fits inside the J-trap. This must be inside the trap when reassembling.

Flush out the J-trap and reassemble.

I would suggest pulling the black elbow out , and blowing thru it , to clear any possible obstruction . Then , use an adhesive , like super glue or a 3m adhesive product , around the black spout . This spout , inserts into the drain pan outlet tube . After applying the adhesive , reinstall the black spout into the tube , and use duct tape to hold it securely , against the refrig body .

Hi,

You could try to unplug and again plug in the refrigerator and check, if that could help the situation.

It definitely is a bad compressor. Your piston inside your compressor has broken so whenever it's shutting down it's rattling and clanking against the compressor shell. It's just gotten worse as time has gone on if your getting another sound as well now.

Most likely it would be better to replace your unit because compressor replacements start at about $500 and can run up to $700 depending on the situation and company.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Automatic ice maker has a steady drip of water in

It is possible that the Ice Maker water valve and the Shut off valve are both leaking. Try disconnecting the water line, turn the valve to the right to be sure it is off first. If the line drips then you will know your cut off valve is bad or not. Also clean the coils under the box while it is out it will improve its efficency over all. Replace any panels you remove to clean, use a vac with long extension as dust is quite nasty.

Refrigerator works fine except water draining into

You will need to remove the small cover on the top of the large piece mounted to the top of the freezer . There , you will see 2 screws which need to be removed . This will allow you to remove the large piece . The piece on the rear wall can now be slid up and removed . Remove the screws holding the rear panel and remove the panel . If you have an ice maker installed , it will need to be removed . Using a hair dryer , start defrosting about in the center , just below the coils , until you see the drain hole . Use hot water to help thaw the hole . Once water runs down the hole , use a small hose inserted into the drain , and blow out any unseen or built up debris in the drain line . Reassemble in reverse order .

The water builds up on the bottom of my fridge

Hello, this sounds like you have a blockage in the drain tube, remove panel back/bottom of freezer..you may see ice build up...melt ice with hair dryer/heat gun...you will see a pan below evaporator...melt ice in pan...dry water up in pan with paper towel...now you should see a hole in pan that leads to drain tube...pour some hot water in pan..wait a couple minutes..mop up water and repeat this step 2-3 times....once you have done this find some flexible curtain wire or electrical wire..poke down the hole until you see the water drain..now it is clear..put back panel back and you are good to go. The reason you see water in the fridge is because the water has been leaking into the freezer and down the vent into the fridge instead of running into the drain hole...Please feel free to comment again if you need any further assistance. Sounds as if your evaporator fan located in the fridge part of the appliance is out. This fan is usually located by the temp control switch. If you open the fridge and listen you should hear the fan humming , if not, then replace the fan. Take the model and serial number to an appliance store and they should be able to get you the part. Good luck on your repairs.

Here is a link to common ice maker problems. Chances are you have a pin hole in the water line. It may also be a leaky water valve which is on that link. also check for a broken ice mold. Best of luck.
