Poulan pro riding mower will not go forward or reverse
check the square key on your drive shaft

My Poulan HD145H42G 14.5 hp B&S 42 " won't fire. Battery seems ok. Not even a click when I turn switch. Seems like an open circuit on seat, blade or drive safety switch. Seat switch checks out ok. Still looking for the other 2 switches. Are they accessible without tearing the mower apart?
Could it be the solenoid? How do I check?
Forget the safety switches for now.The first thing I would check would be the fuse. It will be located on the battery side of the solenoid. Follow your positive battery cable to the solenoid. There will be a small red wire coming off of that post with an inline fuse. If the fuse is good, check your solenoid. There are two wires plugged into spade terminals at the bottom of the solenoid. Unplug the one that is insulated, the other one is a ground. Hook a test light from that wire to ground. When you turn the key to start (with the brake pedal held down), it should light. If it lights, your solenoid is bad. If not, then you can start looking at switches. Probably will be one of the two. Hope this helps. Dwain

I need a diagram of the deck on a 42 inch ride mower poulan
Go to Craftsman, Order Tree or Parts Tree.com and input your model number. Choose the correct tab and go to the mower deck. It will give you a good over view of how the belt routes. Hope this helps.

I have pulled th OHValves and the head gasket looks good. The solenoid retracts when the ignition is switched. The valves, piston and valves look normal. The engine runs great after I pull the spark plug and blow the gas out of the cylinder and have changed the oil. The gas seems to run into the cylinder after it has sit 2-3 days. It don't seem to fill while running. It doesn't burn oil. The engine is 2 years old and never been mistreated.
The problem is the float needle and seat are leaking. It is not shutting off the gas when the bowl is full. The bowl fills up, then runs down the intake through the intake valve into cylinder, past the rings into the crankcase. Fairly common problem. Just replacing the rubber tipped needle probably will not stop the leak. The pressed-in brass seat needs to be pulled out and a new one pressed in also. Possibly there is some trash or rust in the carb that has gotten between the needle and seat, but in my experience, it usually takes replacing both to fix.

It is hard to shift my poulan pro riding mower 42' deack and I cant get it to go into reverse any help would be great
Try loosening the belt tension to the transmission a little bit. Some of these are just stiff and you have to slip the clutch a little to rock them into gear.

Poulan Pro riding lawnmower 42" 18.5 hp 6 speed
It mowed fine. Would not start when I wanted to mow again. Turns starter a little, but not enough to start. Recharged battery--same condition existed. Switched batteries and re-charged that one as well---same condition. Will make a short beginning of an engine turnover, fail to start and appear to have no battery power left. It must be the starter, but unusual because it ran fine immediately before the failure. Thanks for any input.
Replace the battery. Even though the battery may say it's good, it doesn't have enough of cranking amps. Go purchase a battery with 350 cranking amps. This will fix your problem. The battery power isn't enough to kick the starter completely up to turn the engine.
