Sometimes updates running in the background act that way. You can wait it out (could be 1/2 hour or more depending on how many updates) or you can try holding "ctrl", "alt" and tap "del" key and see if "task manager" opens up. If it does, it should show what processes and applications are running. That may give you a clue. Finally, you could just hold the power button down a few seconds until it shuts down. Upon restart, you may have to select an option such as "start normally". If you continue to have problems after the restart you may need to go into "system restore" mode (type "system restore" (w/out quotes) in search box of Start menu, follow the prompts and choose the restore point just before the last system change.

Have a look on Ebay:
pci network card

Make sure you know the difference between PCI and PCIE . Basically, they have a different fitting and aren't interchangeable.
There's a Youtube video which will show you the difference:

This computer does not ship with a graphics card. It contains a GPU, as all standard PC's do.

Hi,

This is an snippet from the Gateway Website.

"In order to access the boot options on this portable computer, press the ESC or F10 key while the Gateway screen is displayed during the startup process. This opens a Boot menu with the option to start the computer to any of the available drives or to enter the BIOS Setup Utility. Use the UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW keys to select a menu option, and then press the ENTER key to start to the selected device. To "boot" (start) to a CD, DVD, or a floppy disk, the media must be in the drive when starting the computer."

It's either F1 or F2. However, once I had a Gateway which needed "Delete". You can try to put one finger on each button and press them successively. If everything goes right, you will enter BIOS and then you will have to enable lagacy usb support, change boot order so that you can boot from USB or CD (it depends...). Hope this helps!

This specific PC requires you to immediately press the "Delete" key at one-second intervals in order to access the BIOS.
Not the F1 or F2 key

Hello,

There are a lot of ways on how you can optimize a computer. You can upgrade the hardware part of your computer which can boost up its performance or you can maintain the current the optimum capability of your computer by making sure that you have an anti-virus running on it and you have all drivers updated. I suggest you install RadarSync to automate driver updates. It's very important if you want it to run in its optimum level of performance.

There is an easy way, and there is a hard way. The easy way requires you to get access to her computer and download Everest Home Edition. After installing the application open it up and find out if you're currently using SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, or something else. You will have to match the memory in order for it to work together.

Now for the hard way. You will need to find a way to open the computer to take a peek inside. Pop out the memory stick(s) by opening the pins holding the memory shown in this picture. Afterward look at the bottom of the memory stick(s). You're looking for the noticeable difference between DDR and SDR as depicted here.

Once again, you will need to match the memory types to ensure that they will work together. Also, please don't insert an odd (3, 5, 7, etc...) number of memory sticks (1 stick being the exception), some motherboards can't handle it.

Let us know what you find out. All the best in helping out ***********-in-Law!
