Look for the boot order options in the setup or pay attention at the actual startup of the laptop when the IBM logo is being displayed. You will notice a message on the screen indicating which button to press to select the "boot order" or "boot options". Press the button (ussually one of the F1 - F12 keys) and you will be presented with a choice of which device to use to boot from.

The best way to troubleshoot is to find another keyboard and test it. Then you would know if its your keyboard having a problem or the desktop/computer

pick f1 to change bios to set to usb permanently.
press f12 to select usb boot on one-off occasion. make sure a usb has not been left in when powered off.
