Are you faxing from the computer or from the control panel directly from the all-in-one? Do you have an answering machine on the same phone line as you fax? which could be interfering (picking up) before the fax machine can pick-up (called the hand-shake, as in when you hear all the funny noises and tones that go back and forth between two machines) In any even, read your manual to make sure it is set up to Tx (transmit) and Rx (receive) faxes; that feature could be off by default http://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/695.pdf

Sandra- some ink jet printer manufacturers are proprietary and use ink cartridges manufactured with "timers" built into them- making it almost impossible for the end-user to re-use them.

You mentioned that you refilled the cartridges; and without knowing what you actually mean by that, I will have to ask you; did you refill the cartridges yourself, or did you send them out to a third-party vendor?

Or perhaps, you are using a generic brand?

All of which can be problematic, if your particular model printer (not all) uses ink expiration technology on their ink cartridges or proprietary technology.

What does this mean? Ink expiration is a built-in date in which certain ink cartridges will stop working; even when there is still ink in them. Manufacturers like HP, claim that it uses such technology to protect the printing systems print-head and ink supply (which are two separate and distinct physical properties on certain printers).

Which now begs the question, does your printer have print-heads that are separate from the ink cartridges?

BTW, ink cartridge nozzles can dry out and block the flow of ink from its reservoir. You can try to manually clean the printer cartridges by using a q-tip swab dipped in rubbing alcohol until it is completely clean.

On a final note, another possibility in the troubleshooting process, reset the ink cartridges chip to full.

1) You can buy a universal ink cartridge resetting tool online or at a local computer or electronic store.

2.) When you do, remove the ink cartridges out of their holding carriages.

3.) Line up the device pins on the resetting tool and the chip on the cartridge. Press the pins and the chip together until they connect.

4.) Keep the pins and the chip connected until the device's LED light turns green (usually takes 10 seconds)- the chip on the ink cartridge will have reset.

5.) Reinsert the ink cartridge into the printer's ink carraige and print a test page. The printer should recognize the ink cartridge.

If all else fails and as a last resort, you will have to buy a brand new proprietary ink cartridge

Actually, it does not matter what mode your printer is on when printing from your computer. Whenever your printer detects a print job sent to it, the printer will automatically acknowledge the signal and print the file - no matter if it's on Copy, Scan or Fax Mode.

Try to plug the printer into a different known working power outlet in the wall. Bypass any power surge devices or power strips - these tend to draw away power from the printer.

A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC. Simply disconnect the printer from your computer > reboot your pc > unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to your computer. Then try to print again once the computer fully recognizes the USB connection.
If that doesn't help, try the steps below:
  1. Disconnect the USB cable connecting the printer from your computer.
  2. On your computer, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.
  3. Delete the Lexmark print object.
  4. Reboot computer.
  5. Re-brick your printer by pulling out the power supply - black box where the power cord is plugged into on the back of the printer, and re-plug after 30 seconds.
  6. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to the computer.
  7. Wait until your computer fully recognizes the USB connection. To check, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. If you see a new Lexmark print object in the list, try to print a document to verify that the problem is fixed.

Try to reinstall the OCR scan software by inserting the Lexmark installation disc that came with your printer into the computer hard drive. If you have a firewall enabled, make sure to allow all Lexmark scan and print processes in the program rules or permission.

Try to re-seat the cartridges into the printer. Remove both cartrdiges > . pull out the power supply (black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer) and put it back after 30 seconds > firmly re-insert the cartridges. Let it print the alignment page.



If the display screen shows "low black ink" again, then try to replace the black cartridge. The printer requires all cartridges to have sufficient ink in them to continue printing. Try to replace your black ink with a new one, preferably a genuine cartridge.

We apologize for the inconvenience. Please follow the steps below to identify and fix the problem:
  1. Open the printer cover to access the cartridge area. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position, unless the All-in-One is busy.
  2. Remove both cartridges from the printer.
  3. Check the cartridge area and make sure encoder strip is not loose. The encoder strip is transparent strip located behind the cartridge carrier along with the carrier belt.
  4. If encoder strip is properly seated in the printer, close the printer cover.
  5. Re-brick your printer. Pull out the power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds.
  6. When the printer turns on, re-insert one cartridge first. Close the printer cover and check for any errors. The carrier jam could be due to one of the cartridges.
  7. If no error appears, re-insert the other cartridge.
  8. Replace whichever cartridge is causing the error to appear.
  9. If no error appears, try to print again to verify that the carrier jam issue is fixed.
