How do I get rid of intermittent scum (slime) coming from the water dispenser in the door? I changed water filter ahead of schedule. Note: there is no scum in the ice cubes.

I am unable to turn the base of the filter to remove it. Is there anything special I should do. This is the first time I have had to change it. It seems to be stuck solid and I can't turn it either way. The filter sits at the bottom of the unit in the vent grill, under the freezer side and the replacement filter is about 10 - 12 inches (30cms) long.
