2003 kawasaki VN 1500 Vulcan Classic Tourer - Fi "stater engage" Questions

stater on my yamaha 1600 roadstar starter will no engage. i was able to engage once by; bypassing solinoid(sp) and direct from bike + battery to stater. I was able to get home . when i turned bike off

starter stays engaged Sticking "Dog" the part of the starter motor that engages with the stater ring. Remove Starter motor, check the spring on the dog ( the shaft that comes out of the starter motor)

starter turns but will not engage moptor I am comcerned that this may be my starter clutch. Is that possible sounds like the clutch. have you tore down the stater to check everything?

How do I know if stater is going bad It could drag down a good battery, turn over slowly etc. Could not engage also if the drive is shot

engage is to bench test the starter. remove the starter and place a ground wire to the frame or housing of the stater and touch a 12v hot lead to the pos  post of starter being careful not to let
