front differential on a 98 jeep grand cherokee for the same problem. the bearings inside the differential on the carrier and pinion gear were worn out causing a humming noise. if the wear is excessive

only it gets much worse over 90 klms/h have done front wheel bearings but still no luck You need differential carrier and pinion bearings. Jeeps had many problems with the differentials in these years
