2004 Mercury Mountaineer "cylinder 3" Questions

...the cylinder order Looking from the front of vehicle,cylinders 1-2-3-4 on the left side..right side is cylinders 5-6-7-8.if it's a 4.6 ltr. ..if it's a 3.0/4.0 v6 1-2-3 left side...4-5-6 right side.

cylinder 1, 3 and 5. Then done a compression test on cylinders 1 and 3. There was no compression in 3. The guy at the shop said it was to big of a job for him. What should I chek first? Broken or worn
