My 2004 gmc envoy has service 4wd light on when I tried to put it in 4wd. I was told that it might need fluid in the transfer case came on til I tried it for the first time this year,

Chevy. 04 silverado 1500 z71 had same issue. But I checked everything and like other person said axles aren't connected to transfer case. It's an electrical issue make sure you have enough grounds. **
