Denon AVR-1601 Receiver "hdmi put audio video" Questions

put to my tv in hdmi. which is better to have, my dish tv hdmi direct to my tv and the dish tv digitial optical audio to the receiver or should I just use the dish tv hdmi only to the receiver and run
