JVC XV-D723 DVD Player - Troubleshooting

inserting any disc (new, pre-recorded, home recorded, etc) the player reads the disc for a few seconds then displays "No disc".
I have followed the troubleshooting recommended by LG and tried a CD cleaning disc. The problem prevails.
Any ideas on how to resolve?

No audio from DVD No audio from DVD or TV sound through the AVR.
iPod & Tuner sound OK.
Tried solution from manual 'troubleshooting" section - worked initially then no.
