Can I use a 4GB SDHC memory card with Vivitar 5385 camera No. The 5385 works with SD cards, not with SDHC cards. You're limited to cards 2GB and smaller. 

...what does that mean It means that memory cards of sizes up to 8GB will work with this camera. 8GB, 4GB, 2GB, 1GB, 512MB, etc. Such cards will work. 16GB and 32GB cards will not
