Washer stops or does not perform cycles

Whirlpool top loader washer will start on warm or hot cycles but not at all on cold? It then stops and doesn't work at all throughout the cycle no matter what setting, I can manually turn the timer nob and it will start again for that cycle period; it will spin, and agitate, and fill, when I do this. Please help.
