Ok, I have a Dell Inspiron 2200. The laptop is about a year and a half old and will no longer POST.
When I press the power button, the 4 lights come on then turn off about 5 seconds later. There is nothing on the screen and the diagnostic boot also does the same.
I tried swapping the CPU as i upgraded to a faster one about a year ago. Nothing. I tried to power up with no cpu installed and it did the same thing. The 4 lights came on and turned off about 5 seconds later.

Did this problem start after you changed the CPU, if not It sounds to me like it could be your power supply you may need to get a new one, (make sure you get one foe a Dell ) as some brands are wired differently. If it did start after you changed the CPU put the old one back & try it again.

ok try removing the battery and plug it into the wall . if it boots up and stays on it was your battery. you did say it was two years old and you made some up grade to it.
