Question for Refrigerator Techs

"Tick" sound = bad compressor? (freezer thawed)

Posted by shurrlll on Oct 22, 2009

I have a GE Profile French door style PFS22SISASS which started a "tick" sound a while back, didn't notice the temp was slowly going up. The "tick" is more frequent now and I came home today to freezer food thawed and digital temp of main fridge is 44 degrees. It is packed quite heavily and wondered if I bumped something inside or if the compressor is broken.

it sounds like the "tick" your hear is the thermal cutout on the compressor operating .. it kicks off the compressor if it gets too hot ... if the compressor buzzes but doesnt start when it should then thats usually a bad starting capacitor .. thats often a cylindrical or rectangular part mounted on or near the compressor .. it has wires going to and from it (often just plugged in) .. it may be a dual capacitor .. one for the compressor and one for the condenser cooling fan .. if you keep running the refrigerator the way it is it will eventually damage the compressor .. so its a good idea to take it out of service until repairs can be made .. the capacitor itself isnt expensive and there are part numbers marked on its case so you can get a replacement .. but if you are not familiar with electricity then its a good idea to call someone to make the repairs .. they can also clean the condenser and fan parts while they are at it .. there are other things that can cause this trouble but thats the most likely from your description ..

There is no compressor capacitor on your model of refrigerator. Sounds like bad relay clicking on the main control board.
