The awning just comes in of its own accord. Why?

Two things to consider: 1) is it electric 2) is it a manual awning... So, if you have electric, check the gear drive , which is plastic, has probably broken. You should be able to disassemble the motor unit case to major this determination. If it is a manual awning, three things are spring tensionerd. If you try to get it to retract idling a strap or hook, you should feel it wanting to pull in. If not, spring assembly has either come become un-sprung, pardon the reference, or the spring has broken and needs to be replaced.

I have a 2009 Keystone Springdale with one large slider. If the motor should fail, is there a manual method to close the slider?

If you go to the slide motor you will see a gearbox the motor drives. It will have a hex head coming out of the gearbox that you will have to have a tool for or a long socket and extension with a drill to run it in or out. IF it doesn't turn one way do not force, change direction and run it in or out whichever you trying to achieve. Most people will be running it in rather than out... All later model slides have this function for obvious reasons.

Slide outs won't come in

#1 is make sure the RV is FOUR WAY LEVEL before attempting. Check for obstructions at the glide points and also INSIDE the RV. A toy on the floor can stop the slide-in. Those apply whether slider is manual or electric. IF it's electric, first thing to check is the fuse for the slider circuit.

Slider gear replace broken gear

You will need to determine the manufacturer of the slide mechanism, the diameter and number of teeth on the gear. Once you have all of the information you should be able to order a replacement gear from your local RV parts department. To replace you will need the unit on level, solid ground. Place a good jack close to where the gear is located. The purpose of the jack is to support the slide while the gear is out. Do not try raise the slide more than is necessary to remove the gear. Remove the bolts holding the gear and remove the gear pack. You may need to use pry bars to assist. If so, use a block of wood against the floor of the slide to pry against. Reverse the procedure to install new gear and ensure the timing of the slide mechanism does not jump.
