GeneralAire humidifiers are reliable and high quality. I've installed several hundred GeneralAire 1042s, a few dozen AprilAires, and a few other kinds as well. The new DME model had some bugs in it when they first came out, but they're all sorted out now.
1042DME: Has an outdoor sensor that is supposed to make the moisture put into the air match that being lost.
1042L: Functions on a basic humidistat, nothing fancy.
The humidifiers in question are ***duct-mounted***. The GAs are easy to install, easy to service and they last and last. The only downside is that they do use quite a bit of water. However, if water efficiency is your primary concern & you don't mind spending about double the money, GA *does* make a steam unit. The model number is Model DS 50.
