Hi Barbara,
There is a wide array of lawn trimmers available and with good reason. Different people have different needs for different applications.
I do have favorites, but rather than push them on you, I believe I would be better serving you I gave you some insight on the attributes to look for that would enable you to get the most from the device.
There are two basic categories: Gas and Electric.
Gas Trimmers:
-Pros
- Powerful, heavy duty whacking is no problems
- Portable, can be used anywhere
- Can handle heavy duty applications, blackberry vines, etc.
-Cons
- Heavy, Larger jobs can tire out your arms,
- Straight lines can be tedious
- Starting, Can be difficult to get started
- Fuel, mixing gas and oil for the fuel can be tedious
- Sometimes too powerful, difficult to control.
Electric Trimmers
-Pros
- Light weight
- Never a starting problem
- Ideal for light duty lawn maintenance
-Cons
- Limited range, you need an extension cord.
- Limited power, no where near as strong as gas trimmers
If you are buying new, consider other needs you may have in the future. Many models have interchangeable attachments that when added to the reach a trimmer affords you can be pretty useful.
For example:
- Hedge clippers - Trim tall hedges without the ladder
- Mini Chain saw - Branch trimming without climbing or ladders
- Blower - Like a leaf blower, surprisingly powerful for the size
I always try tro get more bang for my buck. Having one tool that does many things is win-win in my booklet.
My Brand preference for this is Ryobi. Very reliable starting, 4 Cycle engine (no gas mixing), Very strong, won't bog down when the going gets tough!
I've also become partial to Husqvarna, reliable, well balanced and also powerful. Again these are my preferences, they fill my needs.
These may not be for you. Shop around, look for what you need, you'll know when you pick it up if it feels right. Ask for a demo.
I hope this info is very helpful in making an informed decision.
Mike
