i would actually suggest a jeep, though definately not a wrangler, but zj model, aka a Grand Cherokee. jeeps have high crash test, very reliable, they do have their little quarks, but you can drive them into the ground for years! I do own a 1995 jeep grand cherokee so i am a little biased, but i also own a '92 honda prelude and a '03 GMC yukon XL, and the jeep has by far out lived either car. though it is younger than the prelude, it has been in far more accidents and is still running strong and i have no complaints. The best thing about a jeep also is that you do not scrap a jeep, you can always find someone to buy it, or you can turn it into an off road vehicle like i did, and it really wasnt that expensive. i have only put in a 2 inch lift suspension and 33" tires with flat black rock crawler rims, and it only cost me about $3500. Plus jeeps have excellent roll cages, and have excellent crash test rating. you will never be scared when your kid is driving in the snow or on badly paved roads.
