I am an owner of a small vacuum service and repair center. My selection of brands is wide. However price and reliability is what I would pick. "I'll tell you this." if the carpet has strands in it like burber I would buy a vacuum that works off of just suction alone, bare floor vacuum. But if it's a pile or nylon/plush I recomend a kirby. First it has the weight and suction to retain a longer life of the carpet & and well on bare floors. The cost of the vacuum is well worth the savings of the life spand off the carpet and on a better savings note, the repair cost on the vacuum in my opinion is also well worth it.
This is just my own opinion. Hope this helps. good luck..
