Saturns smallest cars get a new automatic transmission, freshened sedan front ends, and noise-reduction measures for 2005. Ion sedans and 4-dr Quad Coupes reprise a 140-hp 2.2-liter 4-cyl engine and standard 5-speed manual transmission. Automatic is optional, with a 4-speed unit replacing last years 5-speed and continuously variable automatics. The sporty Red Line coupe returns with a manual transmission, a supercharged 205-hp 2.0-liter 4-cyl, and 4-wheel antilock disc brakes. Other Ions have rear drum brakes and offer optional ABS bundled with traction control. Head-protecting curtain side airbags are available for all; torso side airbags are not offered.
