This simple-to-use sandwich maker cooks two tasty grilled cheese sandwiches or croque monsieur (traditional French ham and cheese snack sandwiches) in 5 minutes or less. The sandwich press starts to heat up as soon as it's plugged in so there is no need to flip a switch. However, the red indicator light is small and hidden on the lower right corner of the unit, so you should exercise caution if using in a busy prep area. A green indicator light in the same spot illuminates when the sandwich press is hot enough for toasting. After loading up the press with your sandwich, the unit locks shut for grilling. A test grilled cheese and tomato sandwich made in this appliance toasted the bread and melted the cheese to perfection in only 1-1/2 minutes as opposed to Krups's estimated 5 minutes.
