Product Details
Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) is a point-to-point connection that allows 3-dimensional (3-D) graphics data to bypass the PCI bus, which is a bottleneck for today's PCI graphics computers. AGP allows 3-D texture data out of the frame buffer or graphics controller memory and into computer memory, freeing up frame buffer memory and bandwidth for other functions. AGP directly links the fixed-function graphics processor, the frame buffer, the computer chipset, and computer memory. This design allows graphics processors to access computer memory at the speed of the computer bus. AGP graphics can utilize computer memory for memory-intensive operations, which cuts down the amount of dedicated graphics memory used in today's higher-end graphics solutions. This is referred to as dynamic memory allocation. Dynamic memory allocating computers require a high-performance memory type, such as Synchronous Dynamic RAM (SDRAM).
