Timing is off on 2002 XR200R and all I have is an old book. Can you give me the right timing to set?

you need a KB book, we do not have one, state side.
google , 4JA1 cam timing, good luck , lots of false hits.

no compression can be from valves burnt or held open are you sure that it is the rings
if it is not an overhead cam shaft but uses push rods to move the valves then no problem
if it is an over head cam then no so get a manual on how to set the valve timing before you pull it down
you will need the book for all the torque settings and clearances any way including the ring gap for the new rings

autodata book describes volkswagen passat 2.8 l v6 30 valve --1998-06 as having a belt
it is identified as an intereference engine which means that valve damage will occur if the cam shafts and piston are not set right and are moved with out care being taken

Timing shouldn't have gone out unless you 1) messed with it or 2) a part has failed. If you had points like the old days it would be a snap to replace the points and bring it into time. You'll have to check the repair manual for the location of the pickups for the timing. If you know some mechanics it might be time to call in a favor. You'll need diagnostic equipment, a volt meter at least, but check your manual. Once you find a specific problem it will be much easier to give you the answer. Not starting could also be the ignition coil, spark plug, SPARK PLUG CAP (5 ohm resistor can be tested, in cap), suspect internal sensors of your bike recently overheated. A burned out pickup sensor might be the first to check. But check the spark plug cap, they can build up moisture inside and corrode, they usually have 5 ohm resistors in them. Testing it should show 5 ohms, anything else is questionable. Check out your local hole in the wall accessory shop for some NGK replacement caps. They can get them from K&L Supply in San Jose. Should cost you about $5 unless inflation has gone berserk there too. If you have problems lemme know, I can have caps here in a couple of days and as fast to you as the Post Office can deliver -- 2-3 days. If you can get it a bit more specific and need the best price, tell me and I will make it happen for you.

May not be cam timing, Try to set the ignition timing. (more likely to slip from correct setting)

When you replaced the top end, when replacing the cam gear and timing chain, did you align marks on the timing gear and the cam? The motor should be at top dead center when this is done, at this point the piston is at the highest point and the valves are closed.

timing is set by the computer as long as you got the timing belt marks right it should run good.if not the cam timing is off and you will have to start over.
