Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent inkdrying out in the print head nozzles.
If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, thenprint head needs replacing, but it may be expensive.
It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer thanreplace the print head.

The printer's lying to me

The printer requires both cartridges to have ink before the printer will initialize and operational. Even if you are only printing black and white both cartridge have to contain ink or the printer will error out. This is standard on all ink jet printers from every manufacturer. You will have to get ink before you can print.

Epson Workforce 600 not recognizing black toner

I had the same problem and was told by the store that sold it to me that some printer manufacturers do this on purpose as they make their most money on the ink they sell not the printer. I got rid of mine and purchased an ink jet black only printer as this is all I need anyway. A lot cheaper to use.

Will only print yellow, black and photo black-- red cartridge shows ink in window and I just refilled blue-- cartridge was only out of printer a few hours. I've cleaned the print head a number of...

There are a few things here that will do this. One is the cartridge is a smart cartridge and unless you reset the chip it either won't print or shows low. If you filled it before then this shouldn't be it. If you have refilled the cart more than a few times they sometimes just stop. This is either the ink has jelled inside or the little feeder sponge is dried out. If you changed ink brands sometimes the ink reacts with the old stuff and jells. The other is the jet or any feeder tubes are plugged with dried ink. Usually happens if you haven't printed for a while. You can try running the cleaning cycle and it will take quite a few of these sometimes before it starts working.

There are a few more tricks for cleaning such as using white vinegar to dissolve dried ink but that's a bit of the messy side sometimes. Usually we have just had to buy a replacement cartridge after spending the time on this. We eventually just got rig of our ink jets and got some of the cheaper color laser printers. Wish we had done that sooner.

I have an hp psc 1215 all-in-one. My black cartridge won't print. It recognises if I swap it out for a new one, and goes through all the motions. It registers the correct ink levels. The cradle...

The problem is not with the ink-cartridges. You've proved that, by swapping BLACK cartridges.

The problem is that the ink-jets that spray the BLACK ink onto the paper are clogged.
Thus, no BLACK ink reaches the paper.

Open the HP Printing Assistant, and open Utilities, and run a few "print-head-cleaning" cycles, to try to unclog the print-head.

Run a few "print-head-cleaning" cycles, to get the black ink flowing through the ink-jets inside the print-head.

Some printers REQUIRE an "alignment" step every time you change the ink-cartridges.
It only takes a few minutes, and it prints one or two pages of paper.
