The VSS is located on the side of the transmission casing. As for your solenoid question, you need to be specific about which solenoid and what you are trying to repair or replace.

remove transmission pan gasket and filter . Fill transmission fluid , do this 2 times .

I would start by checking the fluid level just to be sure it hasn't lost enough fluid so it can't engage the clutch packs. If the fluid level is good the you could have an electronic control problem that is preventing it from working but odds are that something mechanical inside the transmission has worn out or failed. A transmission repair shop can hook up the the controller and should be able to determine what has happened fairly quickly. If the problem is inside the transmission it may need to be removed to be repaired. Good luck with your problem, hope this helps out a bit!
