Craftsman mower #247.887760 rear drive. rear wheels lock-up when you try to pull mower backwards

  • Anonymous Jul 10, 2011

there is no manner of drive train release. this is the yellow deck so called "pro" series 21' walk mower. the drive system engages via a belt when squeezing a lever, which when released should allow the wheels to move freely (as it did when it was new). a push mower cannot operate otherwise. i was thinking perhaps the transmission may have an internal loose pawl with a busted spring since the problem occurs 80% of the time.

I had the exact same issue. When self-propelled the mower would still move, but rolling it backwards the rear wheel would get stuck. Mine was caused by a small rock that got lodged in the grooves inside the rear wheel. Take the wheel off and make sure there's nothing blocking the grooves.

The rear wheels are locked to the drive train. To pull or push the mower, you must pull out the release probably at the back of the mower, near the transmission.

The rear wheels will not turn in reverse at all. I

Rear wheel drives like this have pinion gears with rachet pawls that allow them to go backwards freely while locking when the transmission drives them.

You need to take off your rear wheels and carefully remove the pawls. They look like little squareish metal shaft keys with springs under them. You should notice that the keys or pawls are covered in what looks like grease.....which is actually worm metal from the pinion gear and oil mixed together to form this pastey greasey substance. Clean all that stuff off and lightly oil *( light oil...3 in 1 kind of oil) and reassemble.

You should hear the nice clean clicking of the rachet pawls as you roll backwards again!

Good luck and be careful!

Front wheels lock up when pull mower backwards

Typically self-propelled mowers are propelled using the front wheels, which only turn forward. Pulling the mower back while the front wheels are turning will damage the drive gears. It's best to raise the front wheels slightly off the ground before pulling back.

My Craftsman 26" 9HP snowblower pulls to the left. Any ideas?

You likely have it in one wheel drive, try lifting the rear wheals of the ground to check and see if both wheels tirn at the same speed. If they don't then you need to change the wheel that is not turning into a drive wheel by removing the pin and putting it back in in the lock position[usually the next hole back in the axle].

Rear wheels will not turn. Worked fine when stored for the winter

Craftsman-Husky...same tractors-built in the same factory. I also had a problem with the hydrostatic transmission not providing power to the rear wheels. Here's what Sears told me:
(1) Check to make sure the drive belt is tight both under the engine-and the tranny.
(2) Air can get into the hydrostatic transmissions-especially during shipping (new mower) and storage.
So.....
Pull your freewheel pin out to disengage the tranny-then push the mower both forward and then backwards for 50' or so. Then push the freewheel pin back in and start the mower. If the transmission then works-drive forward-then backward-then forward repeating the cycle about 4 times. Drive about 50' in each direction. This should purge the air from the treansmission.

Wheels do not freely roll backwards

SOUNDS LIKE THE PINONS ARE ON BACKWARDS. THE KEY SHOULD SLIDE OFF THE PINIONS WHEN PULLED BACK AND LOCK WHEN ENGAGED. YOU HAVE THE OPPOSITE PROBLEM OR ITS BACKWARDS!
